France has successfully test-fired an M51.3 long-range ballistic missile, according to a statement released by the defense ministry on Sunday. The test aimed to enhance France's nuclear deterrence capabilities and solidify the credibility of its oceanic deterrence for years to come.
The test launch took place at the Biscarosse missile testing site in southwest France, with the missile landing in the North Atlantic, several hundred kilometers away from any coastline. The missile was not armed with a nuclear warhead, and the ministry did not provide further details about the exact distance covered by the missile.
In their statement, the defense ministry highlighted the significant advancements made in the M51.3 missile, highlighting its contribution to maintaining the operational credibility of France's oceanic deterrence in the face of the evolving international environment. Ensuring the enduring potency of France's nuclear weapons is seen as essential in light of global circumstances.
The M51.3 missile is an upgraded version of the M51, a strategic ballistic missile designed for deployment from French Navy submarines. The original M51 was first test-fired from a ground base in 2006 and subsequently from a submarine in 2010 when it was officially commissioned.
Expected to enter service around 2025, the new M51.3 missile has been developed by aerospace firm ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and French defense group Safran. This latest upgrade is set to further enhance the capabilities of France's naval-based ballistic missile system.
Ballistic missiles, like the M51.3, differ from cruise missiles due to their elliptic trajectories, which can take them outside the Earth's atmosphere before reaching their target. Cruise missiles, on the other hand, follow lower-altitude straight trajectories powered by continuous thrust. The M51.3's upgraded features will undoubtedly strengthen France's long-range strike capabilities.
The successful test launch of the M51.3 ballistic missile highlights France's commitment to maintaining a credible and effective nuclear deterrence force. With the missile expected to enter service in the mid-2020s, France aims to remain at the forefront of global security dynamics and secure its position as a key player in the realm of strategic weapons.
