KYIV, Dec 1 - Petro Poroshenko, the former President of Ukraine, announced on Friday that he had been prevented from leaving the country, claiming it was a politically motivated action aimed at disrupting his work. Poroshenko, who served as Ukraine's leader from 2014 to 2019 and is now an opposition lawmaker, shared a video from a border crossing with Poland, where he was denied entry despite holding official permission to travel.

According to regulations under martial law in Ukraine, government officials require special approval to travel abroad. In this case, the Ukrainian parliament's deputy speaker, Oleksandr Korniyenko, confirmed that he had revoked Poroshenko's permission to leave the country. Korniyenko cited a letter, the details of which he could not disclose, as the reason behind the cancellation.

Poroshenko had intended to travel to Poland to aid in negotiations to resolve a truckers' blockade and then proceed to the United States to garner support for Ukraine's ongoing war effort. In a written statement accompanying his video, Poroshenko accused President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's administration of deliberately obstructing his diplomatic work and playing politics in the lead-up to upcoming elections.

Describing the incident as an "anti-Ukrainian diversion," Poroshenko expressed his concern that it not only hindered his team's diplomatic activities but also negatively impacted Ukraine's defense capabilities. It is worth noting that Poroshenko and Zelenskiy engaged in a bitter and highly personalized electoral contest during the 2019 presidential election, resulting in Zelenskiy's comprehensive victory over the incumbent leader.

In a previous announcement, Zelenskiy informed the Ukrainian public that it was not an appropriate time to hold a presidential election, which, under normal circumstances, would be scheduled for March 2024. However, due to the imposition of martial law, holding such an election is currently prohibited.

The incident surrounding Poroshenko's travel restrictions adds another layer of tension to the already complex political landscape in Ukraine. As the country continues to face numerous challenges, including diplomatic negotiations and the ongoing conflict in the eastern regions, it remains crucial to strike a delicate balance between political interests and the nation's stability.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Poroshenko's travel ban is an isolated incident or indicative of a broader political strategy. The situation warrants attention and further investigation to ascertain the motivations behind the decision and its potential implications for Ukraine's political climate.
