Three former Trump administration officials, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sarah Matthews, and Cassidy Hutchinson, have expressed their concerns about the potential danger to democracy if former President Donald Trump is reelected for a second term. In a joint interview with ABC News's Jonathan Karl, the former officials discussed their experiences cooperating with the Jan. 6 select committee and highlighted their worries for the future of American democracy.

Hutchinson emphasized the importance of the upcoming election in safeguarding the country's institutions and constitutional republic. She warned that if the nation crumbles, it would set a detrimental example that democracy is nothing more than an experiment. Griffin echoed her sentiment, claiming that a second term for Trump could mark the end of American democracy as we know it. She pointed to Trump's attempts to "steal a democratic election" as evidence of his willingness to break barriers to gain and retain power.

Matthews highlighted Trump's increasing focus on returning to power and his erratic rhetoric, which includes threats to undermine parts of the Constitution and seek revenge on political opponents. She noted that Trump continues to double down on his belief that the election was stolen and fraudulent.

Hutchinson referred to a recent town hall interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, in which Trump did not categorically reject the suggestion that he would act as a dictator if he returns to power. Hutchinson criticized Trump's willingness to embrace such a role, stating that it demonstrates his lack of character, integrity, and leadership.

All three women stressed the urgency of preventing Trump from being reelected. Matthews, who admitted to never having voted for a Democrat before, expressed her willingness to support President Biden in the next election, putting policy aside for the sake of democracy. Griffin added that their focus should be on ensuring Trump is not elected president again in the next November election, regardless of the available choices.

The three women also acknowledged the challenges of speaking out against Trump, noting the political violence and death threats that many public officials face. Matthews highlighted the fear of death threats towards themselves and their families, which discourages many from speaking out. Griffin condemned the cult-like following that Trump holds over his most diehard supporters, emphasizing the harassment and threats that individuals face when targeted by the former president.

In response to the interview, Trump referred to the three women as "ungrateful grifters" who took jobs for their own benefit and accused them of going "full Judas."
