HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - A former teacher at Southlake Christian Academy has turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Jail after being under investigation for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student. Tyler Melton, 26, is currently being held on a $10K unsecured bond.

According to the Cornelius Police Department, the investigation began on August 2, 2023, following reports of an alleged inappropriate relationship between Melton and a student at Southlake Christian Academy. After conducting a thorough investigation, officials were able to obtain warrants for Melton's arrest, charging him with felony sex acts with a student and indecent liberties with a student.

The alleged incidents involving Melton were said to have taken place off-campus, prompting school authorities at Southlake Christian Academy to take immediate action. On April 29, 2023, less than 24 hours after being placed on leave, Melton resigned from his position as a high school teacher at the academy. The school administration promptly launched an investigation into the reports of off-campus meetings between Melton and a student.

In an official statement, Dr. Matthew Kerlin, the Head of School at Southlake Christian Academy, expressed disappointment in the situation and emphasized the school's commitment to the well-being of its students. Melton voluntarily surrendered himself to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail. The bond for his release has been set at $10,000.
