In a recent court filing, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the couple who took in former NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher as a teenager, have made a stunning claim that Oher attempted to extort $15 million from them. The ongoing legal battle between the two parties arose in August when Oher contested the portrayal of his life in the film adaptation of "The Blind Side," stating that he was never formally adopted by the Tuohy family.
In the newly filed legal documents, the Tuohy family alleges that Oher sent them text messages, specifically demanding a hefty payout of $15 million. According to the filings, Oher threatened to expose his accusations to the press and social media if their demands were not met. The Tuohys are asking the court to deny Oher's request for a temporary injunction, asserting that they have not engaged in any commercial use of his name, likeness, or image.
The filings further claim that Oher's demands for money only emerged after his professional football career had ended. The documents suggest that Oher had become estranged from the Tuohys, mistakenly believing that they had not compensated him adequately. Allegedly, Oher began requesting money through text messages and emails.
One set of texts included in the filings reveals Oher's demand for an escalated amount of $15 million after taxes, stating, "It was 10 million now I want 15 million after taxes." Oher also issued a deadline, threatening to divulge his grievances to the world if a resolution wasn't reached by a specific date. Another text allegedly sent by Oher reads, "Think how it will look when this comes out."
Earlier this year, Oher, aged 37, sought to invalidate the 2004 conservatorship established by the Tuohys when he was a teenager, arguing that he was capable of managing his own financial affairs. Moreover, the petition claimed that the Tuohys falsely portrayed themselves as Oher's adoptive parents. In September, a judge terminated the conservatorship, granting Oher control over his own finances.
"The Blind Side," a popular film based on the 2006 book by Michael Lewis, featured Sandra Bullock portraying Leigh Anne Tuohy and Tim McGraw playing Sean Tuohy. The movie depicted the heartwarming story of the Tuohy family's support and guidance for Oher during his high school years.
As the legal battle ensues, the accusations put forth by both Oher and the Tuohy family have ignited public interest, raising questions about the truth behind the events portrayed in "The Blind Side" and the complexities of their relationships.
