Former Republican Representative George Santos, who was recently expelled from Congress, has declared his intention to expose alleged wrongdoing by three New York Republican Representatives: Nicole Malliotakis, Nick LaLota, and Mike Lawler. In an online statement, Santos hinted at ethics complaints and raised questions about stock trading, job attendance, and campaign finance.
Santos, who is currently facing federal charges for fabricating his background and misusing campaign funds, wasted no time in targeting his former colleagues after his ousting. He took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce his plans to file an ethics complaint against Malliotakis regarding her stock trading activities since joining the Ways and Means committee. Santos suggested that Malliotakis lacked a previous track record of active trading or a significant stake prior to her involvement with the committee.
Additionally, Santos alleged that LaLota was absent from his taxpayer-funded job at the local board of elections while pursuing his law degree. He questioned whether LaLota had potentially misappropriated public funds during this time.
Turning his attention to Lawler, Santos insinuated possible campaign finance violations by highlighting payments made by Lawler's co-founded political firm for services linked to his campaign. Santos raised concerns about whether Lawler may have engaged in money laundering from his campaign into his own pockets through his firm.
In response to Santos' claims, a spokesperson for LaLota vehemently refuted the allegations, emphasizing LaLota's educational achievements compared to Santos' alleged misrepresentations. The spokesperson asserted that Santos was simply frustrated by the congressman's three legitimate degrees, while Santos himself had lied about his own credentials.
Lawler's team dismissed Santos' accusations as baseless attacks from a "serial liar and con man." On the other hand, Malliotakis' team has yet to address Santos' specific allegations.
Critics have voiced their disapproval of Santos' continued pursuit of media attention and called for him to step back from his public statements.
The recent developments have further intensified the already tense atmosphere within the New York Republican party. As the situation unfolds, the spotlight remains on Santos' claims and the potential implications they may hold for his former colleagues.
