NEW YORK (WABC) -- In the aftermath of his expulsion from Congress, former Congressman George Santos has declared his intent to pursue his former Republican colleagues who voted against him. Posting on social media platform X, Santos announced his plans to use the House Ethics Committee, the same institution that issued the damning report leading to his expulsion, in order to file complaints against several New York lawmakers.
Santos took to social media just hours after his expulsion, starting a series of posts that raised allegations against his former colleagues. In his first post, Santos questioned Representative Nicole Malliotakis' stock trading activities, hinting at potential insider trading accusations. In a subsequent post, he stated his intention to file an ethics complaint against Representative Mike Lawler, citing "questionable campaign finance violations." Santos also accused fellow freshman Representative Nick LaLota from Long Island of attending law school while neglecting his duties at the Board of Elections.
The former Congressman affirmed that he plans to file the ethics reports against his former colleagues on Monday, signaling his determination to hold them accountable. The expulsion vote in Congress saw a significant majority, with 311 House members voting in favor of the expulsion, including 105 Republicans.
As a result of Santos' expulsion, a special election will be conducted to choose his successor. According to protocol, Governor Kathy Hochul is required to call for a special election within 10 days of the expulsion vote. Both parties anticipate that the election will be held sometime in February.
The controversy surrounding George Santos, titled "George Santos: The Man, The Myths, The Lessons," was the subject of an investigative report by ABC7 New York's Eyewitness News. This report delves into the politician's ascent to Congress, which was marred by allegations of dishonesty.
Santos' determination to pursue his former colleagues through ethics complaints has generated significant interest, leaving political circles curious about the potential ramifications of his actions. The House Ethics Committee will now be tasked with examining the claims made by Santos and determining their validity in the coming weeks.
