In a tragic incident that occurred early Saturday morning at the Villagebrook Apartments in Carol Stream, Illinois, Isaac Goodlow III, 30, was fatally shot by police during a domestic violence call. Goodlow's family is now seeking answers and has enlisted the services of Chicago civil rights attorney Andrew Stroth to explore potential legal options.
According to authorities, two officers responded to reports of domestic violence at the apartment complex around 4 a.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, they found an injured woman. As the situation rapidly unfolded, the officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the tragic death of Goodlow. The exact circumstances leading to the use of lethal force remain under investigation.
During a press conference on Monday, attorney Andrew Stroth, alongside Goodlow's family members, voiced their concerns, stating that they firmly believe Goodlow was unarmed at the time of the incident. Speaking on behalf of the family, Stroth issued a statement asserting that the shooting was unjustified.
The press conference shed light on Goodlow's personal struggles, as his family revealed that he had overcome health challenges as a child and was bipolar. They suspect that he may have been in the midst of a mental health episode when the altercation with the police took place. However, it is important to note that no conclusive evidence has been provided to support this claim.
The family has not yet determined whether they will pursue legal action but has engaged attorney Andrew Stroth to explore potential avenues for seeking justice in this case.
Acting Carol Stream Police Chief Brian Cluever, while refraining from providing specific details surrounding the officers' decision to use lethal force, emphasized the tense and evolving nature of the situation faced by the officers.
Isaac Goodlow III was transported to Central DuPage Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead by the DuPage County Coroner's Office. Goodlow, a resident of the Chicagoland area, was described by family members as a loving and cherished figure who played a significant role in the lives of his nieces and nephews.
In adherence to departmental policies, all officers involved in the incident had their body cameras activated. They have been placed on paid leave while the state's attorney's office and the DuPage Public Integrity Unit, comprising several law enforcement agencies, review the body camera footage and conduct a thorough investigation.
During the press conference, attorney Andrew Stroth requested that Carol Stream Village President Frank Saverino, Police Chief Donald Cummings, and the DuPage Public Integrity Unit provide the Goodlow family with access to the body camera footage. The family hopes to view the footage and gain a better understanding of the events leading up to Isaac Goodlow's untimely death before making any further decisions.
Goodlow's siblings expressed their grief and called for justice, emphasizing that their brother was a caring individual who would never intentionally cause harm to anyone.
As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, the community awaits further developments and the possibility of additional information regarding this fatal clash between law enforcement and a man in distress.
