In a shocking incident that has left the community in dismay, a driver has been arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after allegedly running over a bicyclist and dragging him for nearly a mile in a hit-and-run crash in Broadway-Manchester. The driver, identified as Felipe Avalos, 66, was apprehended on suspicion of manslaughter.

According to the LAPD, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning around 8:45 a.m. as Avalos was traveling south on Broadway in a white van. He collided with a bicyclist who was crossing near 115th Street, forcing the individual onto the road. Tragically, Avalos allegedly proceeded to run over the bicyclist, who became lodged underneath the van's undercarriage. Despite this, Avalos continued to drive south on Broadway, making multiple turns onto side streets, covering a distance of approximately one mile.

Eyewitnesses reported a horrifying scene, as the bicyclist's body left behind a trail of blood, torn clothing, and body parts along the route of the van. The incident finally came to an end at the intersection of Broadway and El Segundo Boulevard in Compton when the bicyclist was dislodged from underneath the van. Instead of stopping to render aid, Avalos allegedly fled from the scene, leaving the bicyclist lifeless.

The victim's identity has not yet been released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement officials from the LAPD's South Traffic Division quickly responded to the incident and conducted a thorough investigation. Authorities managed to locate surveillance footage capturing the initial collision as well as images of Avalos' vehicle, an older model Chevrolet Astro. With the assistance of a witness who provided a possible license plate number, investigators were able to confirm that the vehicle matched the one involved in the fatal crash.

Follow-up investigations led the police to a residence in Compton, where Avalos' van was found parked in a driveway. Police officers maintained surveillance, and they observed an individual matching the description of the driver leaving the home and entering the vehicle. Taking swift action, the LAPD approached Avalos and took him into custody without any resistance.

Authorities have revealed that a witness subsequently identified Avalos as the person behind the wheel during the time of the crash. As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are urging anyone with additional information or witnesses to come forward to assist in bringing justice for the victim and their loved ones.

This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of responsible driving, respect for traffic laws, and the need to prioritize safety on the roads. The Los Angeles community mourns the loss of the bicyclist and hopes that justice will be served in a timely manner.
