In a heart-stopping moment, a driver was miraculously saved from the roof of his truck as raging flood waters threatened to overtake it. The incredible helicopter intervention, captured on video and shared by the Pacific Northwest Coast Guard, showcased the heroic efforts of the rescue crew as they airlifted the stranded man to safety with precision timing.
The dramatic rescue operation took place in the coastal city of Astoria, located in Oregon, just over the southern border from Washington state. The region has been severely affected by a devastating weather phenomenon known as a 'Pineapple Express,' which has unleashed heavy rainfall and caused flash floods throughout Washington and Oregon.
The deluge of more than eight inches of rain over the past week has transformed roadways into treacherous rivers and sadly claimed the life of one individual who tragically drowned in Portland's Johnson Creek on Monday.
The USCG Pacific Northwest reported that on Tuesday, they successfully rescued five people from the biblical conditions brought on by the relentless downpours. Among them was the driver trapped on the roof of his truck, who was at the mercy of the rising floodwater.
The awe-inspiring footage captured from the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter shows the propellers whirring above a vast expanse of brown water stretching as far as the eye can see. The terrified motorist clings to the roof of his truck as the floodwaters inch closer, with only the vehicle's roof visible above the rising levels.
Braving strong gusts and spray from the floodwaters, a first responder equipped with flippers and diving gear is lowered from the helicopter. Battling the elements, he manages to reach the stranded driver and secures him to a harness. Together, they are lifted to safety as they ascend into the helicopter, where other crew members assist in hoisting them aboard.
In addition to the heart-pounding rescue of the driver on the truck, the helicopter crew also saved four other individuals. These rescues involved using baskets, harnesses, and life jackets to airlift the stranded individuals out of harm's way.
The USCG Pacific Northwest responded to the emergency call at 10:20 am from the Cathlament Fire Department, who requested assistance for four people trapped by four feet of water near their home. However, upon arrival at the scene around 11:08 am, the air crew quickly diverted their attention to the urgent situation of the driver stranded on top of his truck.
After successfully evacuating the man from the perilous floodwaters, he, along with the four individuals from the house, were transported to Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, where emergency medical services awaited their arrival. Thankfully, all rescued individuals are reported to be in stable condition.
The Coast Guard reminds the public to remain vigilant during severe weather conditions by heeding weather warnings and regularly checking reliable sources for flood alerts, such as www.weather.gov. In the event of an emergency, individuals are encouraged to call 911 for immediate assistance.
This extraordinary rescue comes on the heels of a tragic incident in which an Oregon man lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters on Monday. Millions of people in the Pacific Northwest remain under flood alerts as emergency crews work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents amidst the ongoing weather crisis.
As the region continues to battle the devastating effects of the 'Pineapple Express' storm, the bravery and unwavering dedication of the rescue crews serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the selflessness displayed in times of crisis.
