In a shocking turn of events, Deobra Delone Redden, the man who had recently attacked a judge in a Las Vegas courtroom, was handed a prison sentence of up to four years on Monday for an unrelated case. The same judge, Mary Kay Holthus, who was accosted by Redden just last week, presided over the sentencing.
The sentence was in connection with a brutal baseball bat attack that had occurred last year. Redden appeared in court on Monday wearing shackles, a mask covering his face, and orange mitts on his hands, escorted by a group of jail officers. His lawyer, Caesar Almase, opted not to provide any comments outside the courtroom.
During the incident last week, Redden had leaped over the bench and launched himself at Judge Holthus, immediately following his plea for leniency and self-description as someone striving to turn his life around. Court and jail officers, as well as courtroom staff members, intervened and struggled to restrain Redden. Some personnel took physical action, throwing punches in the process. Unfortunately, a courtroom marshal sustained a bleeding gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, requiring hospital treatment.
When Judge Holthus announced her decision to sentence Redden to prison time, a court marshal moved to handcuff him and take him into custody. However, Redden erupted in expletives and charged forward, causing chaos in the courtroom. In a dramatic display, he vaulted a defense table, leaped over the judge's bench, and landed on top of Holthus. A video clip captured the judge falling backward against a wall, with an American flag toppling over them.
Jerry Wiese, the court's chief judge, described the event as Redden "supermanning over the judicial bench." Wiese commended court clerk Michael Lasso for swiftly acting to protect Judge Holthus, stating that Lasso was the "primary person" who managed to pull Redden off the judge, potentially preventing more severe injuries.
The recent sentencing signifies that Redden will now face further time behind bars due to his baseball bat attack last year, adding to the consequences of his violent actions in the courtroom. The incident has shone a light on the importance of courtroom security and the dedication of court personnel to ensuring the safety of judges, staff, and all individuals within the justice system.
