Over 40 Alleged Boston Gang Members Arrested on Federal Charges for Exploiting Children in Violent Crimes

In a major crackdown, authorities have arrested more than 40 accused gang members in the Boston area on federal charges, as they allegedly used children to carry out violent crimes. The charges include racketeering, conspiracy, gun and drug offenses, as well as financial crimes such as COVID fraud and retail theft.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy revealed that these suspects are all believed to be members of the Heath Street Gang, operating near the Mildred C. Haley Apartments in Jamaica Plain. The investigation has led to the seizure of over 60 firearms, some of which were allegedly used in three murders and multiple shootings. One of these shootings, which occurred in October 2016, resulted in a severe injury to a 9-year-old girl during a family gathering.

It was unveiled that the gang members openly boasted about their criminal activities on social media and even created music videos where they ridiculed rival gangs and bolstered their own image. Shockingly, they are accused of involving children in their crimes, using them as lookouts, carrying firearms and drugs, and participating in shootings.

The issue of child exploitation in criminal activities is a concern voiced by urban police chiefs not only in Massachusetts but also across the country. "These bad actors that we targeted today took advantage of young people. They used fear, intimidation and violence to gain personally. They took advantage of the youngest amongst us," stated Joshua Levy. Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox added, "They took advantage of the sons and daughters in these neighborhoods and turned them to a life of crime. This is an impactful investigation. This is going to be impactful for our city for some time to come."

In addition to their violent crimes, the suspects are also accused of engaging in financial fraud, including collecting over $900,000 in COVID relief funds. Shockingly, these funds were allegedly used to purchase more than 100 firearms. It was further revealed that one of the suspects even applied for unemployment assistance in 10 states and territories, including Guam.

This comprehensive operation signifies a significant blow to the Heath Street Gang and their criminal activities. The arrests of these alleged gang members highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat violent crime and protect vulnerable members of society, especially children who are exploited for their nefarious endeavors.
