WASHINGTON - In a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, President Joe Biden called for an immediate halt to attacks by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, comparing the violence to "pouring gasoline on fire." This marked Biden's first public statement on the issue since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas and subsequent Israeli air strikes in Gaza.
Highlighting his concern over extremist settlers targeting Palestinians in the West Bank, Biden stated, "They're attacking Palestinians in places that they're entitled to be and it has to stop. They have to be held accountable and it has to stop now."
Biden has long been a proponent of a "two-state solution" for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the forced displacement of Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank by Israeli settlers has complicated the realization of this goal.
Reiterating the United States' commitment to finding a peaceful resolution, Biden emphasized, "When this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next, and in our view, it has to be a two-state solution."
The president called upon Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure the safety of innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza as Israel continues its military response against Hamas. He reiterated that while Hamas does not represent the vast majority of the Palestinian people, they have been using them as shields. "Hamas is hiding behind Palestinian civilians, and it's despicable and cowardly," Biden stated. He also acknowledged the added burden on Israel in adhering to the laws of war during their operations.
Biden's call for an end to Israeli settler violence comes amidst heightened tensions in the region. The recent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians have resulted in numerous casualties, with both sides engaging in acts of violence.
The international community, including regional partners and global leaders, will play a crucial role in working towards peace and the establishment of a two-state solution. Biden emphasized the importance of collective efforts from all parties involved to pave the way for a lasting resolution.
As the crisis unfolds, the world will be closely watching the actions taken by both Israeli and Palestinian leaders. The hope is that a comprehensive solution can be reached, one that ensures the safety and rights of all people involved.
