The liberal coalition that propelled Joe Biden to victory in the 2020 presidential election is facing divisions due to the escalating Israeli military strikes against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. With the humanitarian situation rapidly deteriorating, the president's unwavering support for Israel's retaliatory attacks risks alienating the young, progressive voters who heavily supported him.

While Democrats remain united on issues such as abortion rights, voting rights, and "Bidenomics," the mounting death toll of Palestinian civilians has sparked a passionate push, particularly among young voters, for an immediate ceasefire. However, Biden dismissed calls for a ceasefire until all hostages taken by Hamas are returned, which has further frustrated the left.

The divisions within the progressive camp may pose a minor obstacle for Democrats in the future, but the more consequential divisions lie between the Democratic Party establishment, led by Biden, and young liberal voters. Any decrease in support from the youngest voting bloc, which played a vital role in Biden's victory, could pose a challenge to his prospects for re-election in 2024.

A significant number of former staffers from Bernie Sanders' presidential campaigns have called on the Vermont progressive to introduce a "Ceasefire Now" resolution in the Senate. While Sanders has not fully endorsed their demands, he has called for a humanitarian "pause" to protect civilians and mitigate the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Tactical differences among progressives remain a concern, but the larger threat lies in young voters' lack of confidence in Biden's handling of the Israeli-Gaza conflict. A recent CNN poll revealed that only 7% of 18-34-year-olds had a "great deal" of trust in Biden, while 54% expressed "a lot" of sympathy for the Palestinian people.

The potential political troubles stemming from young voters' lack of faith in Biden's approach to the conflict are further compounded by their disagreement with Israel's military response. Only 27% of respondents in the same demographic believed that the Israeli strikes were "fully justified." These opinions were formed even before the recent escalation in violence.

While concerns from young voters with conflicting views about the Israeli-Gaza conflict have come under scrutiny, they have also faced backlash from Democratic elected officials and corporate leaders. Some students from prestigious universities who expressed critical views of Israel's actions faced demands for their names to be released and potential blacklisting.

The Biden administration has urged Israeli leaders to delay a ground invasion of Gaza to facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas and the delivery of aid. Biden, however, denied exerting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's response while expressing skepticism about the death toll provided by the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry.

As the Israeli-Gaza conflict continues, the Biden coalition faces the challenge of maintaining unity among its diverse base. The fractures within the progressive movement, particularly with young voters, alongside the perception of Biden's stance on the conflict could have implications for his political future.
