AUSTIN (KXAN) - Tragedy struck the Austin Police Department early Saturday morning when Officer Jorge Pastore lost his life while attempting to rescue two hostages during a standoff situation. The incident occurred at a residence in Austin's southwest side, where officers were initially responding to a reported stabbing.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers entered the house to free the victims, but were met with gunfire from the suspect. In order to call for backup, the officers retreated and the SWAT team was dispatched to the scene.

Shortly after the arrival of the SWAT team, an exchange of gunfire took place between them and the suspect. During this exchange, two SWAT team members were struck. Both injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where sadly one officer, identified as Jorge Pastore, succumbed to his injuries.

Interim Chief Robin Henderson expressed her grief in a social media post, stating, "My heart is heavy today... Please help me and our APD family pay tribute to SPO Jorge Pastore for his brave & heroic actions. Sir, we'll take it from here." Pastore had joined the Austin Police Department in 2019 and served in various units, including the Honor Guard, SWAT Gold Team, Counter Assault Strike Team, and Special Response Team.

Officer Pastore is survived by his wife, two stepsons, parents, and two sisters, as mentioned by Chief Henderson. The APD Honor Guard also paid tribute to Pastore, urging the public to keep the Pastore family and the seriously wounded SWAT officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, in their thoughts and prayers.

Authorities have confirmed that two individuals were found dead in the house, while the suspect also succumbed to their injuries. Specific details regarding the incident have not been released at this time.

As the Austin Police Department mourns the loss of Officer Jorge Pastore, memorial service arrangements are currently being planned. In the meantime, the community stands united in support of the fallen officer's family and the injured SWAT officer as they navigate through this challenging time.
