WORCESTER, Massachusetts -- A university campus in Worcester, Massachusetts, was placed under a seven-hour lockdown on Saturday following a shooting incident that left two individuals injured near a parking garage. The victims, who were not students at Worcester State University, were taken to a hospital for treatment, while the assailants remain unidentified.

According to a spokesperson for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, the altercation occurred in the early hours of the morning near Wasylean Hall and Sheehan Hall. The incident was initially believed to be an active shooter situation, but authorities later clarified that it was the result of an altercation rather than a targeted attack.

Massachusetts State Police, in a press release issued by Dave Procopio, the Director of Media Communications, confirmed that the incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the altercation are ongoing, and authorities have clarified that it is too early to determine if a suspect is in custody.

Throughout the duration of the lockdown, a shelter-in-place order was in effect, with the campus reopening and the order being lifted around 9:30 a.m. However, the public is urged to avoid areas where law enforcement officials are still working, as investigations continue.

As a result of the incident, Worcester State University made the decision to cancel all homecoming and family weekend events, along with other campus activities. The university, situated approximately 50 miles west of Boston, is working closely with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. The safety of the campus community remains a priority, and efforts are being made to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.

As investigations progress, updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
