At least seven people have lost their lives after a powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Friday. The death toll rose to seven on Saturday, and rescue efforts continue to locate two individuals who are feared trapped underneath a landslide.
The earthquake, which originated from a submarine location near the southern tip of the country, caused significant damage and a wave of panic among residents. Falling debris claimed the lives of some victims, including a woman in General Santos City who was crushed by rubble. Another couple was tragically killed when they were pinned under a collapsed concrete wall.
In Glan municipality, Sarangani province, another person was fatally struck by a falling steel structure. Additionally, rescue workers are using shovels to dig through a remote mountain village in search of two missing family members who are believed to be buried under a landslide.
The impact of the quake extended beyond human casualties. Damage was reported in various areas, with 60 houses, 32 roads, and bridges across the region being affected. Approximately 450 individuals sought medical attention for panic-induced symptoms and breathing difficulties.
Although the earthquake occurred along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a zone known for its seismic and volcanic activity, no tsunami warning was issued by authorities. The epicenter was located 26 kilometers (16 miles) from Burias at the southern tip of the Philippines, with a depth of 78 kilometers (48 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey.
The local seismology service has attributed the earthquake to the movement of the earth's crust along the Cotabato trench. This trench, which forms the boundary between two tectonic plates, is a long, narrow depression on the seafloor.
Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities and volunteers work tirelessly to locate the two missing individuals. The affected communities are receiving support and aid from the government and various organizations to help them recover from the devastation caused by this natural disaster.
As the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of the earthquake, the resilience and spirit of the people shine through as they come together to rebuild and support one another in this difficult time.
