Officials have apprehended a 15-year-old suspect in connection with a shooting incident that occurred in Times Square earlier this week. Identified as Jesus Alejandro Rivas Figueroa, the teenager from Venezuela was taken into custody and is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder.
According to court documents, the shooting incident took place during a reported shoplifting attempt at a store in Times Square. Figueroa allegedly fired a gun at a security guard who confronted him and another individual at the entrance, but missed and hit a bystander's leg instead.
As the incident unfolded, Figueroa reportedly fled the scene and encountered a New York City police officer on 47th Street in midtown Manhattan. It is alleged that Figueroa fired two shots at the officer before making his escape.
After the shootings, court documents indicate that Figueroa returned home and quickly packed his belongings with his mother, fleeing the city. However, their attempted escape was short-lived, as Figueroa was apprehended in Yonkers by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force just 24 hours later.
The authorities have revealed that Figueroa is also wanted for an armed robbery that took place in the Bronx on January 27. Additionally, police have connected him to a shots-fired call in midtown Manhattan, where a shell casing was recovered.
Court documents state that Figueroa will be charged as an adult, facing not only two counts of attempted murder but also charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
The arrest of the 15-year-old comes as a relief to the community, as residents and officials express their gratitude to the law enforcement agencies involved in swiftly apprehending the suspect. The investigation into the Times Square shooting and Figueroa's alleged involvement in other crimes continues, with authorities determined to ensure justice is served.
The New York Police Department is urging anyone with additional information regarding these incidents to come forward and assist with their ongoing investigation.
