In a short time since his arrival in Denver, quarterback Zach Wilson has already impressed his new head coach. Following his trade from the New York Jets to the Denver Broncos in April, Wilson finds himself in a crowded quarterback room, alongside Jarrett Stidham and rookie Bo Nix.
During the team's OTAs (Organized Team Activities), head coach Sean Payton revealed that all three quarterbacks have been splitting reps with the starters. Stidham took the first-team reps on Tuesday, followed by Wilson on Wednesday, and Nix on Thursday. While Payton cautioned against reading too much into these early OTA reps, he praised the efforts of his quarterbacks, acknowledging their determination to learn the system.
Referring to the Broncos' quarterback room, Payton lightheartedly called them an "orphan group," emphasizing that each player is seeking a fresh start and a chance to prove themselves as NFL starters. Wilson appreciates his coach's metaphor, recognizing the challenges he has faced in his career and the importance of having someone believe in him.
Speaking to the press, Wilson expressed his gratitude for his time with the Jets and his former teammates. He acknowledged that there are bittersweet moments, but he eagerly embraces the opportunity for a fresh start in Denver, ready to attack a new challenge.
Wilson also spoke about his excitement to learn from Payton, who enjoyed a successful tenure as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, including winning a Super Bowl. Wilson praised Payton's coaching style and the efficiency and explosiveness displayed by him and former Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
Interestingly, Wilson received a message of support from former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who reached out to him upon his trade to Denver. Manning, a legend in the Broncos' franchise, is someone Wilson admired growing up. He expressed his desire to spend time picking Manning's brain and learning from his vast experience.
Since the retirement of Peyton Manning, the Broncos have been in search of their next franchise quarterback. Manning was the last quarterback to lead Denver to the playoffs, ultimately winning the Super Bowl. Wilson's trade to Denver provides hope among fans that he may be the one to fill this void.
As Wilson adjusts to his new team, he remains determined to grow and learn every day, guided by the wisdom of his coach and football legends like Manning. With a fresh start in Denver, Wilson has all the motivation he needs to make his mark and lead the Broncos back to their winning ways.
