In a blow to the New York Yankees, top prospect Jasson Dominguez will be sidelined for up to eight weeks due to a "moderate" oblique strain, as confirmed by Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Thursday. This puts a damper on the team's hopes of utilizing Dominguez's talents in the near future.
The injury occurred during a Triple-A game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last weekend, marking the second significant setback for the young Dominican switch-hitter in his short career. Dominguez had recently returned from a lengthy rehab stint following September Tommy John surgery.
Based on MLB's Health and Injury Tracking System (HITS), a grade 2 oblique strain involves "extensive damage" and muscle fiber involvement but does not result in a complete rupture. Full recovery from such an injury typically takes two to three months before a return to athletics is possible.
If Dominguez makes a successful recovery and the estimated eight-week shutdown holds true, he could potentially be ready for rehab games by late August. This timeline aligns with the expansion of rosters from 26 to 28 players, allowing Dominguez to position himself for a September call-up or even be considered for the Yankees' postseason roster.
The 21-year-old phenom had been enjoying an impressive season before his unfortunate injury, boasting a batting average of .356 with six home runs and 13 RBI across 23 games. While the majority of his performances were part of his rehab assignment, he had been particularly stellar with Scranton, hitting .389 (14-for-36) with two home runs.
Dominguez's journey has not been without hurdles, as his UCL tear was discovered last fall during his initial call-up, where he showcased his potential by hitting .258 with four homers and seven RBI in just eight games.
The Yankees will now have to face the reality of being without their top prospect for an extended period of time. However, they remain hopeful that Dominguez will make a full recovery and return to the field stronger than ever.
It remains to be seen how the team will cope with this setback as they continue their season, but fans will eagerly await the promising prospect's return and anticipate the impact he could have down the line, both in the regular season and potentially in postseason play.
