Los Angeles Sparks guard Layshia Clarendon has officially declared their retirement from the WNBA following the conclusion of the 2024 season. With a career spanning over 12 seasons and playing for six different teams, including the Fever, Dream, Sun, Liberty, Lynx, and most recently the Sparks, Clarendon has solidified their mark on the league. The 2017 WNBA All-Star made the announcement expressing mixed emotions, highlighting the significance of concluding their career back in their hometown with the Sparks.

During their tenure with the Sparks, which began in February of 2023, Clarendon made significant contributions to the team. Starting 36 out of 45 games, they showcased their skills by averaging 8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. A standout moment in the 2023 season was when Clarendon scored a career-high of 30 points in New York, achieving a milestone of reaching 2,000 career points. Notably, they finished the season with the second-highest free-throw percentage at 91.5.

Clarendon, aged 33 years and 13 days, left a lasting impact in the 2024 season by becoming the second-oldest WNBA player to record a triple-double on the opening night against the Atlanta Dream. This remarkable feat included 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in just 30 minutes of gameplay. Their performance marked them as only the third player to achieve a triple-double in their team's inaugural game of a season, showcasing their exceptional skills and leadership on the court.

Head Coach Curt Miller expressed admiration for Clarendon's unwavering dedication and leadership, noting their positive influence both on and off the court. Similarly, Sparks General Manager Raegan Pebley commended Clarendon for their exceptional contributions to the team and the broader community, highlighting their courage, competitiveness, and commitment to social advocacy. As they transition into a new chapter post-retirement, Clarendon leaves behind a profound legacy within the WNBA that has inspired fans and players alike.
