After months of failed contract negotiations, it appears that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers may be heading towards a resolution - or more likely, a split. However, the 49ers may not be the only team involved in a potential trade, as it has been reported that five-time Pro Bowler Amari Cooper of the Cleveland Browns could also be included in a deal.
According to ESPN, the Cleveland Browns have shown interest in acquiring Aiyuk for quite some time. The discussions between the two teams are reportedly intense and ongoing, with trade compensation and a potential new contract for Aiyuk being the main points of consideration. Sources also suggest that Amari Cooper could be part of the trade package if the deal between the 49ers and Browns materializes.
Cooper, who recently turned 30, had previously held out of the Browns' mandatory minicamp in search of a pay raise this offseason. However, it was reported that he secured an additional $20 million in guarantees from Cleveland through a contract restructure. While this restructure initially signaled his commitment to the Browns through 2024, the 49ers find value in targeting Cooper as they aim to strengthen their wide receiver lineup alongside Aiyuk.
Both Aiyuk and Cooper are coming off impressive seasons. Aiyuk recorded a career-high in receiving yards with 1,250, establishing himself as the Browns' primary target in the passing game. Cooper, on the other hand, has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in four of his last five NFL seasons, showcasing his consistent performance.
Despite the ongoing discussions, no immediate trade involving either wide receiver seems imminent. However, NBC Sports Bay Area reported that the 49ers have granted Aiyuk permission to negotiate a long-term contract with other teams. Additionally, the 49ers have reportedly agreed to a "framework" of a trade with both the Browns and the New England Patriots. Aiyuk, however, has reportedly declined multiple contract offers from other teams, as he seeks a lucrative extension before entering the final year of his rookie contract.
As the talks continue, fans and analysts eagerly await the outcome of these potential trades, as they could significantly impact the rosters of the 49ers, Browns, and possibly the Patriots. Only time will tell if deals involving Aiyuk and Cooper will come to fruition, but one thing is clear - a shake-up in the wide receiver market may be on the horizon.
