### Lakers Eye Big Man Upgrade Amid Offseason Moves
The Los Angeles Lakers are in the thick of their offseason, addressing key questions following a first-round exit in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. To revitalize their chances of becoming title contenders next season, the Lakers are focusing on improving their rotation, particularly by acquiring a dominant center. This strategic shift aims to strengthen a roster already boasting superstars Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
In their recent playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Lakers' lack of a rim-protecting center was evident. Observations revealed that a strong defensive presence in the paint was sorely missed, underscoring the pressing need for a physically commanding big man who can also act as a lob threat. As a result, the Lakers' front office has placed high priority on filling this crucial gap.
One standout candidate for this role is Houston Rockets' center, Steven Adams. Renowned for his elite offensive rebounding and physical style of play, Adams seems a natural fit to reinforce the Lakers' frontcourt. However, the Lakers’ pursuit of Adams faces a significant obstacle. Reports indicate that the Rockets have earmarked Adams as their top priority among their impending free agents, suggesting they aim to secure his extension.
According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, "Veterans Steven Adams, Jeff Green, and Jae'Sean Tate will be unrestricted free agents as of June 30 - but of the trio, Adams is seen as the clear priority... Adams, who earned $12.6 million last season, would be a natural fit for teams such as San Antonio, New York, Indiana, and both Los Angeles organizations. But the Rockets are operating under the assumption Adams wants to return - and will continue to speak with his representation about a possible extension."
Adams concluded the 2024-25 season with averages of 3.9 points and 5.7 rebounds, playing behind starting center Alperen Sengun. His veteran presence was pivotal in helping the young Rockets secure the second seed in the Western Conference.
Given the likelihood of Adams staying put with the Rockets, the Lakers are expected to explore alternative solutions to address their need for a reliable big man. The team's front office will leave no stone unturned to ensure they acquire a player who can make an immediate impact and bolster their championship ambitions.
