**Top College Football Teams Face Major Shifts After Stunning Upsets and Tight Victories**
This weekend's college football games brought significant upsets and narrow victories that will undoubtedly alter the College Football Playoff (CFP) landscape ahead of the forthcoming rankings release on Tuesday. Two top-five ranked teams suffered losses, while top-10 teams barely hung on to their positions. According to the latest US LBM Coaches Poll for Week 12, drastic changes are anticipated in the rankings, affecting the bids for the larger, newly expanded 12-team playoff field.
One of the biggest surprises came as No. 2 Georgia experienced their second defeat of the season at the hands of No. 12 Ole Miss, which entered the week with two previous losses. Additionally, No. 4 Miami was surprised by an ACC rival, Georgia Tech, ending the Hurricanes' hopes for an undefeated season. Close encounters saw No. 9 BYU and No. 10 Indiana narrowly escape with one-score victories.
Alabama, ranked highest among two-loss teams at No. 11, dealt No. 13 LSU their third loss of the season, effectively knocking the Tigers out of playoff contention. Other significant eliminations include No. 18 Iowa State and No. 22 Pitt, both of whom saw their playoff aspirations vanish with losses.
Georgia's loss led to their ousting from the top four, potentially forfeiting their first-round bye. Texas, which previously lost to Georgia, now positions itself to claim the SEC’s automatic spot. Despite their notable win over Georgia, Ole Miss remains just outside the playoff field. Oregon continues as one of the four undefeated teams, and Miami persists in the top four despite their recent loss, primarily due to being the ACC’s top team. Boise State holds a favorable position for the No. 12 seed as the fifth-highest-ranked conference champion.
In a significant move, Ohio State retained their No. 5 position after triumphing over Purdue. Although Alabama's decisive victory over LSU led to a one-spot rise, their two losses limited their advancement in the projections. Georgia’s drop to No. 11 still leaves them with a strong chances of making the playoff field.
If the season concluded today, Ohio State would face Boise State, with the victor meeting No. 4 Miami in the quarterfinals. No. 6 Tennessee is set to play No. 11 Georgia this week in a critical matchup that could lead to further ranking shifts. The winner of this game would then challenge No. 3 BYU. Additionally, No. 2 Texas awaits the outcome of Penn State-Alabama, while No. 1 seed Oregon would compete against the winner of the No. 8 Indiana and No. 9 Notre Dame game.
The College Football Playoff games commence with first-round matchups on Friday, Dec. 20, and Saturday, Dec. 21. The national championship is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The latest CFP rankings will be revealed on Tuesday, Nov. 12, during an ESPN broadcast at 8:30 p.m. ET, in between college basketball games at the Champions Classic.
