In anticipation of warmer weather and increased outdoor activities, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has recently shared valuable information and tips on how to avoid tick bites this summer. Ticks, small blood-feeding parasites known for transmitting diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease, pose a potential health risk to individuals who come into contact with them.

According to the DOH, there are four tick species commonly found in Washington State that are known to bite and transmit diseases to humans. Although a specific type of tick not native to Washington is responsible for causing Alpha-gal syndrome, a red meat allergy, individuals traveling to the eastern or southeastern United States may be at risk of exposure to this tick species.

To help individuals prevent tick bites, the DOH suggests several helpful tips. Firstly, it is essential to be aware of areas where ticks are commonly found. Ticks prefer wooded areas, grassy fields, and areas with dense vegetation, so it is important to be cautious and take precautions when spending time in these outdoors spaces.

Additionally, the DOH advises individuals to wear protective clothing that covers exposed skin and keeps ticks from attaching themselves. This includes long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Tucking pants into socks or boots can also provide an extra layer of protection against ticks.

The DOH stresses the importance of using insect repellents that contain 20-30% DEET or other EPA-registered ingredients. These repellents are effective in repelling ticks and should be used according to the product's instructions. It is also advisable to perform frequent tick checks, especially after spending time in tick-prone areas. Removing ticks promptly reduces the risk of disease transmission.

By following these precautions, individuals can minimize their risk of tick bites and the potential transmission of tick-borne diseases. The DOH strongly emphasizes the need to stay vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect oneself while enjoying the outdoors this summer.

Remember, being informed and prepared is the key to enjoying a safe and tick-free outdoor experience. Stay alert, follow the DOH's recommended tips, and stay safe from tick-borne illnesses this summer season.
