In a recent announcement, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that over 9,500 cases of apple juice sold at Walmart stores across the United States are being recalled due to elevated levels of "inorganic arsenic." The impacted product, "Great Value" brand 8oz Apple Juice, was manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc and sold in six packs of PET plastic bottles.
According to the FDA, the recalled apple juices have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 0-78742-29655-5 and a "best if used by" date of December 28, 2024. This recall was initiated by Walmart on August 15 and is classified as a "Class II" recall since the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
The affected fruit juices were sold at Walmart stores in several states and territories including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.
An investigation by the FDA revealed that the apple juices contained arsenic levels of 13.2 parts per billion, exceeding the upper limit of 10 parts per billion set by the FDA's industry guidance for apple juice in June 2023. Arsenic, a naturally occurring mineral, is toxic to humans.
Exposure to high levels of arsenic can have serious health consequences, especially for young children. The FDA emphasized that it can lead to adverse neurological effects such as learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties, and lowered IQ. For adults, long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic has been associated with an increased risk of skin disorders, as well as bladder, lung, and cardiovascular diseases.
In the short term, consuming high amounts of inorganic arsenic can cause various side effects including nausea, vomiting, bruising, and numbness or burning sensations in the hands and feet.
Despite the presence of arsenic in some food items, the FDA advises consumers to maintain a balanced and varied diet, considering the nutritional benefits of different foods. They recommend consuming nutrient-dense foods from vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein sources.
FOX Business reached out to Walmart for further comment on the recall, but no response has been received at the time of writing this article.
It is important for consumers who have purchased the affected "Great Value" Apple Juice to discontinue its use and return it to their nearest Walmart store for a full refund. For any additional information or concerns regarding the recall, customers can contact Walmart directly.
The FDA urges consumers to remain vigilant and regularly check their website or subscribe to their email alerts for more updates on food safety recalls to ensure the well-being of themselves and their families.
