### Justin Verlander Intends to Pitch Another Year Despite Challenging Season

Veteran pitcher Justin Verlander is determined to extend his career for at least one more year after a difficult 2024 season. At 41, the Astros' right-hander faced numerous setbacks, including multiple injuries that impacted his performance. Following Houston's elimination by the Tigers in the wild-card round, Verlander expressed his intent to continue playing, highlighting that he still has much to offer.

"This year was a tough year. Learned a lot from it," Verlander told reporters on Wednesday. Reflecting on his season, Verlander emphasized that he believes he has more to contribute on the mound. Dealing with both a shoulder injury and neck discomfort, his journey back to the field was fraught with challenges, but he remains optimistic about his future.

Having been traded from the Mets to the Astros last year, Verlander is now a free agent. His $35 million player option for the next year did not vest, as he failed to pitch the required 140 innings in 2024. His season began with a shoulder injury, leading to a delayed start, and was later compounded by neck issues that landed him back on the injured list in June.

Verlander's statistics for the season included a 5-6 record with a 5.48 ERA over 17 starts. His struggles were particularly evident upon his return from neck injury in August, during which he allowed 30 runs in 33 1/3 innings over 10 starts. Consequently, Houston decided to leave him off their postseason roster.

"I've talked to you guys about how I was feeling coming back and how I needed to push the issue a bit. Kind of a weird injury in the neck," Verlander explained. Despite his efforts to be an asset to the team, he acknowledged his performance did not meet the required standards.

Though disappointed with not being able to contribute in October, Verlander remains focused on the future. "Having an offseason to kind of get things right, I definitely feel like I want to continue to pitch and compete. And I'm not ready to step away yet," he said.

The Astros' postseason run came to an abrupt end with a 2-0 sweep by the Tigers, who will now move on to face the Guardians in the ALDS. Despite the setback, Verlander's commitment to returning stronger next season provides a silver lining for the Astros and their fans.
