Following the US Men's National Team's disappointing 2024 Copa America campaign, doubts surrounding Gregg Berhalter's future as coach have intensified. U.S. Soccer's recent statement criticizing the team's performance does not bode well for the 50-year-old coach. The statement issued by U.S. Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker expressed dissatisfaction with the team's early elimination from the tournament, stating that their performance fell short of expectations.
The USMNT's journey in the 16-team Copa America began with a promising 2-0 victory over Bolivia. However, they suffered a significant setback in their second game, a 2-1 loss to Panama, after winger Tim Weah received a red card in the 18th minute and goalkeeper Matt Turner was substituted at halftime due to injury. Uruguay secured their group's top spot with a victory over the USMNT, while Panama finished in second place.
With the focus now shifting towards the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the question arises as to whether Berhalter will still be at the helm of the team. Berhalter, despite the setbacks and criticisms, believes he is still the right person to lead the USMNT into the prestigious tournament.
This isn't the first time Berhalter's position as coach has come into question. The doubts initially surfaced after the USMNT's early exit from the 2022 World Cup, where young star Gio Reyna received limited playing time. During a leadership conference, which Berhalter believed to be an off-the-record environment, he mentioned a disciplinary incident involving a player who almost faced expulsion after reacting poorly to not starting in the team's opener against Wales. Although the player wasn't named, rumors surrounding Reyna had already emerged. In 2022, Reyna addressed the situation in an Instagram post, expressing his hope for privacy. He admitted to letting his emotions control him but apologized and believed that he had received forgiveness.
Adding fuel to the fire, Reyna's parents, Claudio and Danielle Reyna, former US national team players, revealed an incident from 1991 where Berhalter kicked his now-wife Rosalind during a heated argument outside a bar while they were in college. While Berhalter acknowledged the incident's accuracy, he claimed that its reporting was an act of blackmail. U.S. Soccer investigated the incident, resulting in Berhalter's temporary absence from coaching duties. However, he was later reinstated as the team's coach last summer.
As the USMNT's Copa America journey concludes, Berhalter's future hangs in the balance. U.S. Soccer's comprehensive review of the tournament performance, along with their plans to improve the team's results for the 2026 World Cup, indicates that changes may be on the horizon. The upcoming months will likely provide clarity on whether Berhalter will have the opportunity to guide the USMNT on their home turf in the highly anticipated World Cup.
