In what could be a disappointing turn of events, the highly anticipated seventh-annual Little League Classic between the Tigers and Yankees in Williamsport, Pa. is under the threat of a rainout. With a dicey forecast looming, both teams made a last-minute travel decision, ensuring they were prepared in case the game was postponed. However, it remains uncertain whether the game will be postponed or canceled altogether.
The Tigers and Yankees, who share a mutual off-day on Monday, are keeping their fingers crossed for better weather. Tigers' manager A.J. Hinch expressed his hope for clear skies: "Everybody's rooting for better weather. You know it would be a bummer to get it rained out," he said. "It would probably be more of a bummer to fly there and not play. We're in a waiting pattern. It doesn't look great, but all of us are amateur weather forecasters and not experts. So we'll wait to be told what to do."
Tarik Skubal, the Tigers' scheduled starting pitcher for the Little League Classic, opted not to fly in a day early as per usual practice. This precautionary measure was taken in case of inclement weather on Sunday. Skubal, while enthusiastic about the unique event, acknowledged the potential challenges of the day, stating, "It's going to be a fun environment... It's probably going to be a whirlwind of a day."
The game, set to take place at 7:10 p.m. at Bowman Field, Williamsport, Pa., features a pitching matchup between RHP Marcus Stroman of the Yankees and LHP Tarik Skubal of the Tigers.
Stroman, experiencing an up-and-down season in his first year with the Yankees, recently had a solid outing, allowing only one run on four hits. However, his previous performance saw him struggling, giving up seven runs on eight hits in just 2⅔ innings.
On the other hand, Skubal, who is making a strong case for the American League Cy Young award, continues his impressive journey with an eye-catching record of 14-4 and an impressive 2.53 ERA. He aims to emulate the achievement of former Tigers' pitcher Justin Verlander, who secured the pitching Triple Crown (wins, strikeouts, and ERA) back in 2011.
As fans eagerly await the final decision regarding the game, all hope for the weather to clear up, allowing the Tigers and Yankees to showcase their skills in this unique Little League Classic.
