North Carolina's basketball program is facing challenges in filling the void left by missed opportunities in the transfer portal to add centers to their roster. The experts at Inside Carolina, Sherrell McMillan and Sean Moran, discussed the team's current situation on the Coast to Coast show hosted by Joey Powell.
According to McMillan, the Tar Heels' roster is mostly set in terms of numbers at positions 1 to 3, as well as the power forward position. However, there remains a crucial hole at the center position. UNC had hoped to secure a player who could either platoon with Jalen Washington or play significant minutes per game. Unfortunately, the desired player who could contribute 30 to 33 minutes each game is no longer available in the transfer portal. Despite this setback, there is still time for the team to find someone who can fill a platoon role with Washington.
McMillan also revealed that UNC is in the process of re-evaluating their goals and reaching out to coaches and contacts to explore potential options. It seems that the team is considering recalibrating their approach and potentially looking for a big, athletic player who can play a hybrid 4-5 or 5-4 position. The experts emphasized the need for someone who can complement the strengths of the team's guards and wings.
Moran highlighted the challenges UNC may face in matching up against diverse playing styles and physical opponents. They expressed concerns about finding players who can defend athletic, face-up power forwards and big, bruising centers. The departure of Armando Bacot leaves a significant gap in defensive capabilities, and the team may experience a decrease in offensive rebounding productivity.
Despite the setbacks, both experts believe that UNC still has a strong foundation with their guards and wings. They consider the team's 1-3 positions to be championship-caliber and are optimistic about the skills and potential of players like RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau. However, it is clear that the team will need to make additional additions to round out their roster and fill the void left by missed transfer portal targets.
In terms of grading UNC's progress thus far, McMillan suggested an "incomplete" as the team is still actively pursuing players to complete their roster. While they have secured the services of Cade Tyson, an impressive shooter, it is evident that the team has not yet met their objectives of acquiring an impact center. The experts highlighted that more clarity on the team's roster will emerge in the coming month, allowing for a more accurate assessment.
As UNC continues their search for suitable players in the transfer portal, fans eagerly await news of potential additions to their roster. The coming weeks will be crucial for the team and Head Coach Hubert Davis as they aim to finalize their 2024-25 roster and ensure a competitive season ahead.
