In a surprising turn of events, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an appearance at the National Governors Association's 2024 Summer Meeting held at The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City on Friday, July 12, 2024. Describing Ukraine's ongoing war as a battle between good and evil, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for support from the United States and other countries to fight against Russia's "criminal" acts and unprovoked aggression.

During his 10-minute speech, Zelenskyy received repeated standing ovations from the governors, delegates, and the capacity crowd at the ballroom of the Grand America. The Ukrainian President expressed gratitude to Americans for their support and urged each governor and community leader to play a crucial role in ensuring the victory of good over evil.

While in Utah, Zelenskyy engaged in constructive discussions with both Democratic and Republican governors, Utah elected officials, business executives, and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also met privately with a church delegation led by Elder Quentin L. Cook, discussing the church's presence in Ukraine and humanitarian assistance in the region.

The visit of President Zelenskyy to Salt Lake City was made possible through the efforts of Jonathan Freedman, the honorary consul of Ukraine in Utah. Freedman reached out to Ukrainian ambassador Oksana Markarova, suggesting that Zelenskyy attend the National Governors Association meeting after his participation in the NATO summit in Washington, D.C. Utah Governor Spencer Cox extended a formal invitation from the governors association, which eventually led to the confirmation of Zelenskyy's visit.

During his time in Salt Lake City, Zelenskyy also witnessed the signing of a sister-state relationship between Utah and Kyiv Oblast, the Ukrainian province surrounding the capital city of Kyiv. This signing, involving Governor Cox and Ambassador Markarova, signifies the strong support from Utah for Ukraine.

In terms of priorities, Zelenskyy highlighted the urgent need for air defense systems, weapons for frontline soldiers, and support in protecting normal life and rebuilding in Ukraine. He reiterated the desire to send a strong signal to potential aggressors through international collaboration.

Utah has maintained strong ties with Ukraine over the years, with various organizations providing meaningful support to the country. Zelenskyy's visit further strengthens these connections, allowing for discussions on collaboration in humanitarian efforts, business, and trade.

The Ukrainian President's presence at the National Governors Association meeting not only sheds light on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine but also emphasizes the importance of international assistance in safeguarding peace and stability. As President Zelenskyy continues his efforts to rally support for Ukraine, his visit to Utah serves as a reminder of the global significance of this battle between good and evil.
