After the Ukrainian Air Force shot down a Russian Beriev A-50U spy plane on Friday near the Sea of Azov, resulting in its destruction, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that the Russian military had grounded five other aircraft. The Russian government has not yet commented on the incident. Additionally, Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence asserted that two Su-35 aircraft and three Su-34 planes from Russia were recalled from their missions in the area near N.P. Millerovo following the A-50U loss. The Su-34 planes are reportedly Russia's primary supersonic bomber crafts and the Su-35 planes are used as fighter jets to escort the bombers. Since the conflict in Ukraine began in February 2022, Russia is estimated to have lost about 25 Su-34 planes. Ukrainian claims have not been independently verified, as both sides often exaggerate enemy losses while downplaying their own.
