After weeks of speculation and uncertainty, employees at X now have a confirmed date for the closure of the company's San Francisco headquarters. In a brief note to staff on Thursday, X, formerly known as Twitter, announced that the office will shut its doors for the last time on September 13, according to insider sources. Notably, this date falls on a Friday, a day associated with superstition and bad luck for some. The news has added an ironic and ominous twist to the company's story in San Francisco.

X's takeover of the expansive, one-million-square-foot Art Deco building in 2012 was met with great anticipation and controversy, as the company secured a tax break from the city. Hopes were high that Twitter's presence would rejuvenate the mid-Market neighborhood. However, since Musk took ownership of the company two years ago, the building has seen a decline. Thousands of employees were laid off, significant furniture was auctioned off, and the iconic Twitter sign was abruptly removed from the exterior. As a result, several floors of the building have remained empty and unused.

Until Thursday's announcement, X employees were left in the dark regarding the closure of the San Francisco office. CEO Linda Yaccarino had not provided any updates since an email at the beginning of August mentioning the imminent closure. The suddenness of the news left employees scrambling to make arrangements for their future. Those affected by the closure will be relocated to offices in either San Jose or Palo Alto.

Meanwhile, X's headquarters is expected to move to Texas, joining other Musk companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Company. This consolidation of operations has become a common strategy for Musk, streamlining operations and fostering collaboration between his ventures.

The symbolic significance of the closure on Friday the 13th is hard to miss. For some, it is a day associated with bad luck and superstition, while for others, it brings to mind the horror film franchise bearing the same name. Regardless of personal beliefs, the closing date adds a darkly ironic chapter to the company's San Francisco legacy.

A representative from X did not respond to requests for comment on the closure. With just two weeks remaining until the final day, employees now face the task of bidding farewell to the San Francisco headquarters and transitioning to new locations. The closure of this prominent tech company's headquarters serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of the industry and the challenges businesses face in adapting to the evolving needs and demands of the market.
