Opening statements kicked off the trial of "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed on Thursday in connection to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez-Reed, 26, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence after a live round of ammunition made its way onto the film's set and into a gun held by actor Alec Baldwin. If convicted on both counts, Gutierrez-Reed could be sentenced to up to three years in jail.
The case revolves around allegations of Gutierrez-Reed's "sloppy" handling of weapons on the set and claims that she failed to properly check the gun involved in the shooting. Prosecutors argue that her conduct was unprofessional and negligent, highlighting that live rounds of ammunition were found in the gun holster worn by Baldwin as well as on Gutierrez-Reed's ammo cart.
In response, Gutierrez-Reed's attorney, Jason Bowles, countered that Baldwin's failure to adhere to safety regulations was a contributing factor in the tragic incident. Bowles argued that actors are prohibited from pointing real guns at others on a set and asserted that Gutierrez-Reed did not bring the live rounds to the scene.
As the trial progresses, prosecutors are expected to present witnesses who will testify about Gutierrez-Reed's alleged unprofessional behavior and substance use. Additionally, evidence such as video footage of Baldwin handling a prop gun on set and text messages indicating Gutierrez-Reed's drug and alcohol usage after work may be introduced.
Both Gutierrez-Reed and Baldwin are facing legal repercussions in connection to the shooting. While Gutierrez-Reed is currently on trial, Baldwin, who was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter, is set to stand trial later this summer. The case has garnered significant attention and scrutiny, as both parties maintain their innocence in relation to the tragic incident that resulted in Hutchins' death.
