In a major tech outage on Friday, travel plans were thrown into disarray, leaving airlines struggling to recover and passengers facing frustrating delays and cancellations. The disruption has caused significant challenges for air travel, resulting in the grounding of thousands of flights and the misplacement of crew members.
Airports, including Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), are still grappling with the aftermath of the outage, working tirelessly to resolve check-in and security issues that have led to long lines and crowded terminals. While some passengers have reported slight improvements after the past two days of frustration, many still find themselves stranded.
RDU, a major hub for several major airlines such as United, Delta, and American, continues to experience delays and cancellations. The tech outage on Friday severely impacted the airlines' computer systems, resulting in widespread flight cancellations and delays in processing passengers.
Passengers who had rebooked their flights for Saturday now face additional delays, compounding their already stressful situation. Many have had to deal with last-minute changes and endure long waits at the airport. Marlena King shared her experience, stating, "Our flight had been canceled. They kept getting pushed back, so then we get there and they say, 'Oh, this is your terminal now.' Then we get there, and they say, 'We can't put you on a flight yet because we don't have a flight attendant.' So we're like, 'Okay.' So it went from 12 to 1 to now."
Raquel Fletcher echoed the frustration, saying, "As soon as we got here, I got a text message that it was delayed 4 hours, but our ride already left, so we're just going to wait it out and hope that it does leave when it says it's going to leave."
Despite some progress being made, exhausted passengers are eager to know the status of their flights so they can plan their next steps accordingly. RDU airport officials have advised affected passengers who had prepaid for parking to contact RDU parking for a refund. They have also encouraged passengers to directly check with their respective airlines for specific flight information.
The fallout from the tech outage continues to cause travel chaos, with airlines and airports racing to get operations back on track. Passengers hope for smoother travel experiences moving forward as authorities work diligently to address the ongoing issues caused by the disruption.
