Less than three weeks before the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, highly-regarded defensive prospect T'Vondre Sweat found himself in trouble with the law. According to KXAN's report on Sunday, the Texas product was arrested in Austin, Texas, on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
T'Vondre Sweat, 22, was detained at the Travis County Jail in Austin earlier on Sunday. Jail records indicate that he has been charged with a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a possible punishment of up to 180 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000.
The incident occurred at 4:41 a.m. on Sunday morning when Austin Police responded to a crash involving an SUV driven by Sweat and a sedan on Interstate-35. The driver of the sedan fled the scene on foot immediately after the collision.
This arrest comes as a surprise, as Sweat has been projected to be a first- or second-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, scheduled to begin on April 25. In 2023, he was named an All-American and received the prestigious Outland Trophy, recognizing him as the nation's top interior offensive or defensive lineman. Moreover, CBS Sports currently ranks him as the No. 82 overall prospect in the 2024 class.
Standing at an impressive 6-4 and weighing 365 pounds, Sweat's size and skill earned him the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year accolade. Despite his arrest, Sweat's potential in the NFL remains unaffected, as he has yet to join the league. However, the incident may impact his draft stock.
After being released on a $3,000 bond, Sweat has scheduled visits with the Tennessee Titans on Monday and the Seattle Seahawks later this week, as reported by NFL Media. His younger brother, Josh Sweat, is a pass rusher for the Philadelphia Eagles.
While it is unlikely that Sweat will face any NFL discipline for the arrest, as he has not yet entered the league, his draft position and future in professional football may now be uncertain. As the draft approaches, teams and scouts will have to evaluate the situation carefully before making their final decisions.
