Tiger Woods completed his milestone 100th round at the Masters tournament, marking a significant achievement in his career at Augusta National Golf Club. However, it was a challenging performance for the five-time champion as he carded a 5-over 77, finishing the tournament at 16 over par. This score not only marked Woods' worst score to par in his major career but also his second-worst score to par as a professional.
As Woods walked off the 18th green, he found himself at the bottom of the leaderboard among those who made the cut. The 48-year-old golfer experienced both highs and lows during his 26th Masters appearance. On Friday, he secured the longest made cut streak in tournament history, earning his 24th consecutive weekend appearance after shooting initial rounds of 73-72. He entered the weekend with hopes of contention but struggled to maintain his momentum on Moving Day.
During Round 3, Woods encountered difficulties resulting in a 10-over 82, which matched his highest score in relation to par in his major championship career. Reflecting on his performance, Woods stated, "It was a good week all around. Unfortunately, yesterday didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to. Today, the round that I thought I had in my system didn't materialize."
Despite the challenges, Woods showed moments of comfort and potential as he began the final round on Sunday. Assisted by his son, Charlie, during practice, he made a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole for the first time in the tournament. However, mistakes began to accumulate, resulting in a bogey on the 3rd hole and a lost tee shot on the 5th hole. Woods eventually posted a triple-bogey 7, representing his fifth triple bogey or worse in his Masters career.
Over the next few hours, Woods displayed a solid stretch of eight consecutive pars but struggled to convert on several birdie opportunities. A bogey on the par-5 15th ended his streak and put him at 5 over for the day. Despite a nifty up-and-in from the bunker on the 16th, Woods finished his round with a 77.
Recognizing the significance of the moment, Woods paid tribute to CBS broadcaster Verne Lundquist, who was calling his final Masters broadcast from the 16th tower. The bond between the two legends was evident as Woods walked off the green on the iconic 16th hole.
Looking ahead, questions emerged regarding Woods' upcoming competition schedule. He previously stated his intention to participate in all four majors, meaning he is likely to play in the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla next month. Woods missed the previous year's PGA Championship due to injury and withdrew from the championship two years ago after a challenging third round.
"This is a golf course I knew going into it, so I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla, and [Royal] Troon," Woods stated regarding his future plans. He emphasized the importance of preparation and familiarizing himself with the courses ahead of time due to potential changes.
As Tiger Woods concludes his journey in the 2024 Masters, fans and spectators eagerly await his future performances and hope to see him regain his form in the upcoming tournaments.
