In a fresh setback for Ticketmaster, the UK's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has launched an investigation into the company's ticket sales of the upcoming Oasis reunion tour. This scrutiny adds to the challenges faced by Ticketmaster's parent company, Live Nation, which is already grappling with an antitrust lawsuit in the United States that could potentially lead to a breakup of the concert promotion giant.

The CMA announced on Thursday that it will be looking into whether customers were treated unfairly by Ticketmaster during the ticket-selling process for the Oasis reunion tour. One aspect that will be examined is whether fans were adequately informed about the possibility of "dynamic pricing," where prices fluctuate based on factors such as demand. While this practice is not automatically illegal, it may be considered a breach of consumer protection or competition laws under certain circumstances, as stated by the CMA.

Additionally, the authority will investigate whether customers were pressured to make hurried purchases at higher prices than they anticipated. The CMA emphasized that ticket sales platforms must be transparent and provide clear and accurate information regarding the prices consumers will have to pay. Depending on the evidence gathered, the investigation could lead to a variety of outcomes, including the closure of the inquiry, securing commitments from Ticketmaster to address concerns, or even taking legal action against the company. It is important to note that the CMA will have the power to impose fines once the Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers Act comes into force later this year.

Ticketmaster has expressed its cooperation with the CMA's investigation. Over the weekend, numerous fans attempting to purchase tickets for the Oasis reunion tour took to social media to voice their grievances, complaining about inflated prices, long waiting times, and error messages on Ticketmaster's website. Some shared their frustrating experiences of waiting for five hours, only to encounter a message stating that their session had been suspended.

CMA CEO Sarah Cardell emphasized the need for fans to be treated fairly during the ticket-buying process. She stated, "It's clear that many people felt they had a bad experience and were surprised by the price of their tickets at check-out."

In response, a spokesperson from Ticketmaster clarified that the company does not set ticket prices. According to Ticketmaster's website, prices are determined by promoters and artists and can either be fixed or based on demand.

The ticket-buying process for major concerts has often been a source of frustration for buyers, and Ticketmaster has faced public scrutiny in the past. In November 2022, the company drew criticism for its handling of ticket sales for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. Additionally, Ticketmaster was previously involved in controversy surrounding ticket sales for a concert commemorating King Charles' ascension to the British throne.

As the investigation progresses, the CMA aims to ensure that fans are treated fairly and receive transparent information when purchasing tickets for events.
