As Ukraine enters its third year of battling Russian aggression, discussions about finding an "off-ramp" for President Vladimir Putin have shifted towards the West needing an exit strategy. The staggering cost of the war, with recovery needs now at US$486 billion, is putting a strain on Western support. Concerns over Russia's aggression are rising among G7 countries, with the war in Ukraine becoming a costly distraction amidst other global crises.

President Volodymyr Zelensky's plea for more Western arms and funding highlights the critical need to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities. Without increased support, Ukraine risks losing the war, leading to potential dire consequences and a dangerous humiliation for the West. Amidst fears of a Russian victory, calls for negotiating a ceasefire and strengthening domestic defense capabilities are gaining traction.

Ukraine's pursuit of security deals with Western allies aims to safeguard its sovereignty and democracy in the face of continued conflict. The challenge now lies in establishing a sustainable solution akin to the Korean peninsula's 38th parallel. The alternative, a slow defeat without increased military support, could have far-reaching implications beyond Ukraine.
