### Jets' Struggles Reflect Aaron Rodgers' Decline and Defensive Woes
Aaron Rodgers' statistical decline, evident during his last season with the Green Bay Packers, appears to have followed him to the New York Jets, contributing to their disappointing 2-6 start. Following a torn Achilles, Rodgers has displayed a noticeable hesitation in his throwing, leading to an uncharacteristic performance despite a strong supporting cast.
In 2022, despite being under one of the lowest pressure rates in the league, Rodgers' performance dipped with a receiver group boasting talents like Allen Lazard, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Randall Cobb, with Aaron Jones adding 59 receptions. This trend continues with the Jets, where Rodgers faces the second-lowest pressure rate in football. The Jets have stacked their roster with players to suit Rodgers, including former first-round pick Garrett Wilson and dynamic running back Breece Hall.
Yet, the responsibility for the Jets' poor start can't be placed solely on Rodgers. There have been numerous missed throws and miscommunications in the passing game – passes just out of reach, routes run slightly off target, and fingertip grabs that end in incompletion. Coupled with the regression of what was once an elite defense, these mistakes add up to the Jets' current predicament.
Last year, the Jets defense ranked among the top in the league, finishing third in expected points added (EPA) per play and second in opponent success rate. However, by Week 8 of the current season, the defense has sunk to 14th in EPA per play and 11th in success rate. This decline was on full display in a recent loss to the Patriots, where the Jets led 13-7 at halftime but then allowed three scores, including two lengthy touchdown drives, to backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
The most significant drop has been in the run defense, which last season was fourth in success rate and ninth in EPA per play. Following their loss to the Patriots, the Jets' run defense has plummeted to 22nd in EPA per play and 23rd in success rate.
In summary, the Jets' early-season woes can be attributed to both Rodgers' noticeable decline from his MVP form in 2020 and 2021, and a significant regression in their defensive performance. With neither the defense nor the offense firing on all cylinders, it’s no surprise that the team finds itself struggling.
