In a disappointing turn of events, Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens is expected to sit out the upcoming season after suffering a significant lower body injury during a scrimmage on Saturday, according to sources close to the team. The news comes as a blow to the Aggies, as Owens had a stellar freshman season in 2023, racking up 743 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, and earning SEC All-Freshman honors.
As a true freshman, Owens showcased his talent by leading SEC freshmen in rushing yards with 385 and kick return yards with 249. He quickly became one of Texas A&M's most promising playmakers and was anticipated to have a breakout sophomore season under new coach Mike Elko. However, this unfortunate injury will put those plans on hold.
Fortunately for the Aggies, they still have a strong running back core to rely on. Junior Amari Daniels, who was the team's leading rusher last season with 532 yards and six touchdowns, will shoulder a greater responsibility in Owens' absence. Additionally, junior running back Le'Veon Moss, who recorded 484 rushing yards and five touchdowns last season, will provide valuable support to the offense.
To further strengthen their running back unit, Texas A&M secured the services of graduate transfer EJ Smith from Stanford this offseason. Smith, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the team. He amassed 557 rushing yards and five touchdowns over 24 career games with the Cardinal.
The Aggies will face a tough challenge in their season opener on August 31 as they host the formidable Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who are ranked No. 7 in the preseason American Football Coaches Association poll. The absence of Rueben Owens will undoubtedly be felt, but Texas A&M remains confident in their depth and is determined to overcome this setback.
Although Owens' injury is undoubtedly disappointing, the Aggies are focused on their upcoming season and are ready to face the challenges ahead. With talent and determination on their side, they aim to make a mark in the SEC and prove their mettle against top-ranked opponents.
