The Houston Texans will face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 without their leading rusher, Joe Mixon. Mixon sustained an ankle injury during the Texans' victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 2. The injury occurred following a tackle by Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards, which appeared to be illegal due to a hip-drop maneuver. Despite initially leaving the game after the injury, Mixon returned but will not be able to play in the upcoming matchup.

With Mixon sidelined, the Texans will turn to Cam Akers to handle the majority of the rushing duties. Akers previously played for the Vikings in 2023 before being traded from the Los Angeles Rams. Despite a shortened season in 2023 due to a torn Achilles tendon, Akers has displayed his capabilities as a reliable running back. Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik expressed confidence in Akers' abilities, praising his vision, decision-making, and physicality on the field.

The absence of Mixon and backup running back Dameon Pierce, who is also recovering from a hamstring injury, poses a challenge for the Texans' running game. Mixon, currently seventh in the NFL in rushing yards for the season, will be a significant loss for the team. Nevertheless, the coaching staff believes in Akers' skill set and experience to step up in Mixon's absence. With his ability to read plays effectively and demonstrate strength in the running game, Akers is poised to make an impact in Week 3 against the Vikings.
