Tesla prematurely announced that Nissan electric vehicle drivers could now utilize the Supercharger network in North America. However, the EV giant quickly backtracked on this statement. Initially placing Nissan on its list of approved automakers, Tesla subsequently reverted the Japanese car manufacturer back to the "coming soon" category. Nissan has since confirmed to Electrek that while Supercharger access is not yet available, it is expected to be rolled out by the end of the year.
The confusion appears to stem from internal miscommunication within Tesla. Adding to the complications, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk recently fired the entire charging team. This drastic move was reportedly aimed at setting an example after then-head of charging, Rebecca Tinucci, voiced her disagreement with Musk's proposed layoffs following an earlier wave of job cuts. Instead of solely dismissing Tinucci, Musk chose to let go of the entire team, later sending an email to other managers highlighting this incident as a cautionary tale.
The sudden shake-up within Tesla's charging department has had significant repercussions. To address operational needs, Tesla has had to rehire several of the previously dismissed team members to rebuild the department. This internal turmoil is believed to have delayed the opening of the Supercharger network to other automakers in North America.
For weeks, communication difficulties with Tesla's charging team reportedly hindered discussions with various automakers. This lack of coordination likely contributed to the delay in extending Supercharger access to Nissan and potentially other brands. Nevertheless, the issue seems to be on the road to resolution with an anticipated rollout by year-end.
