Tesla owners and third-party technicians can now access a detailed and comprehensive diagnostic and repair utility called Service Mode. Unlike many other vehicle manufacturers, Tesla's Service Mode does not require external plugs, adapters, or computers, making it easily accessible.
Service Mode is a hidden app within the Tesla vehicle that offers various diagnostic tools to test different vehicle subsystems and components. While some features are intended for debugging or repair purposes, Tesla has ensured a user-friendly interface for easy navigation.
Accessing Service Mode is straightforward. Users need to tap on the vehicle controls button on the touchscreen, followed by the Software tab. By tapping and holding the word "MODEL" for two seconds, a menu and on-screen keyboard will appear, prompting for an access code. Typing in the access code "service" grants entry into Service Mode. It is important to note that safety features are disabled while in this mode, so driving the vehicle is not recommended.
Exiting Service Mode can be done by locating the red icon with a wrench either in the dock or All Apps menu. Tapping and holding the red exit icon for several seconds will remove the red border around the screen, indicating that Service Mode has been successfully exited. If the icon is not found, re-entering Service Mode and then locating the red exit icon is advised.
Tesla's Service Mode is divided into several sections, providing various information and functionalities. The Vehicle Info section offers insights such as VIN, software version, and Autopilot computer details. Service Alerts, Service Settings, Software Reinstall, and Touch Screen check options are also available in this section. Additionally, users can access the vehicle's Service Guide online through the Additional Resources button.
The Infotainment tab within Service Mode consists of two menus - Connectivity and Software. The Connectivity menu displays information about Wi-Fi and cell connectivity, as well as the status of the vehicle's modems. It also allows users to run tests on each modem. The Software tab provides details on the downloaded software, backup banks, and map information.
In the High Voltage section, users can conduct Battery Health tests and obtain information on the high-voltage system, including the battery, inverter, motors, vehicle charger, and related components. The temperature of the battery and details on connected charging apparatuses are also displayed.
The Low Voltage system provides information on various low voltage components, including the type of battery used. For Cybertruck owners, who have a different voltage system, this section differs.
The Thermal menu in Service Mode showcases the status of the HVAC system, coolant, and thermal pumps. Additionally, it offers options for self-tests and the ability to check the status of cabin and HEPA filters.
The Chassis menu allows users to access steering options, adjust steering wheel offsets, check suspension information, re-calibrate the steering column, and confirm the functionality of steering wheel buttons and stalks. Brake-related tests and options are also available in this menu.
The Closures menu displays the status of windows, automatic doors, and defrosters. Users can recalibrate windows and perform tests specific to their vehicle model.
The Safety & Restraints section provides an overview of airbags, seat restraints, occupancy sensors, and pyro fuses. This section allows users to verify the proper functioning of these safety features.
Aside from Service Mode, Tesla offers Service Mode+ and Toolbox3. Service Mode+ is an additional set of tools accessible only to Tesla and requires a Toolbox3 setup and subscription. It provides advanced diagnostic and repair capabilities for fleet owners, collision centers, and Tesla technicians. Toolbox3, available through a subscription, offers third-party technicians and collision centers access to additional data and functionalities for vehicle maintenance.
Tesla continues to prioritize providing detailed and user-friendly tools for efficient vehicle maintenance and repair. The availability of Service Mode empowers Tesla owners and technicians to perform comprehensive diagnostics and maintenance tasks with ease.
