In a recent development, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has announced a recall of 125,227 vehicles in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted a malfunction in Tesla's seat belt warning system, which could potentially increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.

According to the NHTSA, the affected vehicles, including certain 2012-2024 Model S, 2015-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles, failed to comply with federal safety requirements. Specifically, the seat belt warning light and audible chime may not activate when the driver is not wearing a seat belt, endangering both driver and passenger safety.

To address this issue, Tesla has proposed an over-the-air software update that is expected to be deployed starting in June. This update will remove the dependency on the driver seat occupancy sensor from the software, relying solely on the status of the driver seat belt buckle and ignition to activate the seat belt reminder signals.

This recall comes after Tesla recalled 200,000 Model S, X, and Y vehicles in January due to a software malfunction that hindered visibility when reversing. In April, the company also recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks to rectify an accelerator pedal pad issue that could potentially become loose and get stuck in the interior trim.

Furthermore, the NHTSA opened an investigation last month to assess the adequacy of Tesla's recall of over 2 million vehicles, announced in December, to install new Autopilot safeguards. This was prompted by a series of crashes involving Tesla vehicles.

Owners of the recalled Tesla vehicles will be notified by the company and advised to schedule a visit to a Tesla service center for the necessary software update. Tesla urges its customers to promptly address the issue to ensure the safety of all vehicle occupants.

It is worth noting that Tesla's proactive approach in addressing these safety concerns through recalls and software updates demonstrates the company's commitment to maintaining and enhancing the safety of its vehicles.
