In yet another setback for Tesla, the electric vehicle company is recalling more than 125,000 Models S, X, 3, and Y due to seat belt warning malfunctions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The seat belt warnings on these vehicles are not lighting up and chiming as intended, potentially posing a safety risk to drivers and passengers.
This is not the first time Tesla has faced seat belt problems. Just over a week ago, the company completed a seat belt fix on 110,000 Model X vehicles after reports of seat belts detaching while the cars were in motion. The initial complaints about this issue date back to early 2023.
However, Tesla's seat belt concerns pale in comparison to its notorious Autopilot problems. In 2023, the company was forced to recall almost 2 million of its EVs, encompassing nearly every Tesla on U.S. roads, due to safety concerns. The Autopilot system, which is designed to assist drivers, has been linked to 29 deaths and over 200 crashes in the United States alone.
According to a study, Tesla drivers had the highest accident rate in 2023. The automaker's recalls have only escalated in 2024, with a total of six recalls affecting more than 2.5 million vehicles in the United States. Notably, Tesla's recalls trail only Ford in terms of their reach within the country.
The most recent recall, issued on May 30, focuses on the seat belt warning issue. Tesla's warning lights have been found to have a font size that is too small, making it difficult for drivers to read critical safety information on the instruction panel and potentially increasing the risk of accidents. At the time of this article's publication, Tesla has not responded to requests for comment regarding the latest recall.
Tesla continues to face challenges on multiple fronts, with ongoing concerns regarding its Autopilot system and now further issues related to seat belt warnings. As the company works to address these safety concerns, customers and regulators alike will be closely monitoring Tesla's efforts to ensure the well-being of its drivers and passengers.
