In a surprising move, the Tennessee Titans have bid farewell to their former third-round pick, Malik Willis, after two seasons with the franchise. The quarterback has found a new home with the Green Bay Packers, where he is expected to serve as the backup for Jordan Love in his second year as a starter.
Titans coach Brian Callahan addressed the decision, stating that it is one they may not have made last year. However, a rule change pertaining to emergency quarterbacks has impacted Willis's role within the team. The league's decision to reverse the rule, which allowed emergency quarterbacks to not count towards the 53-man roster, ultimately led to Willis no longer fitting into the Titans' plans.
Callahan expressed his preference for a rule adjustment, suggesting the allocation of a 54th or 47th spot on game day exclusively for carrying a third quarterback. Unfortunately, the current roster constraints prevent such flexibility. The NFL recently undid the rule change that allowed emergency quarterbacks to be on the roster without using an additional spot. Now, quarterbacks must be elevated for game day and can only be done three times per year for practice squad players.
Throughout his NFL career, Willis has appeared in 11 games, earning three starts. While he has yet to score a passing touchdown, he has accounted for three interceptions and a completion rating of 53%.
As Willis embarks on a new journey with the Packers, his presence will serve as valuable support for Love's development. Meanwhile, the Titans look to move forward with their roster reconfiguration as they adapt to the changes in quarterback regulations.
