Authorities in Georgia have detained a suspect in relation to the suspected homicide of a 22-year-old nursing student from Augusta University, whose body was discovered on the University of Georgia campus on Thursday. The victim, identified as Riley, was found with visible injuries near UGA's Intramural Fields and Lake Herrick. Officials, who assured there was no ongoing threat to the UGA campus, scheduled a news briefing for 7 p.m. where further details would be provided.

Riley, who had previously attended UGA before pursuing a nursing program at Augusta's Athens campus, was a Dean's List student. Police are urging anyone who noticed anything suspicious between 7 a.m. and noon on Thursday around UGA's Intramural Fields and Lake Herrick to contact them. An autopsy is pending, and authorities are treating the case as a homicide.

Both UGA and Augusta University canceled classes and events for the day following the tragic discovery. The last reported homicide on UGA's campus took place 20 years ago, with UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark emphasizing there was no immediate danger on campus during a news conference on Thursday evening. The public is advised to avoid the Lake Herrick area as investigations are ongoing.
