Authorities have apprehended a suspect accused of forcefully driving a vehicle through the entrance gate of the FBI's Atlanta field office on Monday afternoon. Identified as Ervin Lee Bolling, a Navy veteran hailing from South Carolina, the suspect was charged with interference with government property, according to Dekalb County Police spokesperson Officer Elise Wells.
After attempting to enter the facility by following an employee through the front gate, Bolling was promptly arrested. Following the crash, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation and is currently in the custody of DeKalb County police, confirmed a federal law enforcement official. As of Tuesday morning, Bolling remains hospitalized.
It is still unclear whether Bolling has legal representation at this time. FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Peter Ellis addressed the incident during a press briefing on Monday, confirming that the suspect was not affiliated with the FBI field office and was unable to breach their security measures.
The concerning incident occurred approximately two weeks after the FBI's Atlanta field office conducted a tabletop exercise to evaluate response procedures for unauthorized entries. These security drills were part of the bureau's proactive measures following an attempted breach of an FBI field office in Cincinnati in 2022, in response to an increase in threats against personnel.
While the motive behind Monday's incident remains unknown, the FBI has initiated a case into the matter. Law enforcement officials reported that the suspect did not utter any statements while being taken into custody.
As investigations continue, authorities reaffirm their commitment to maintaining the safety and security of FBI field offices nationwide. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in safeguarding their facilities from potential threats.
