As August settles in, Washington D.C. finds itself in the midst of an unrelenting heatwave, with temperatures soaring into the 90s and little relief in sight. Residents are advised to stay prepared and take necessary precautions as the heat advisory extends until 8 p.m. today and will return on Friday.

The month of August began where July left off, with sweltering temperatures that are set to persist for the first Friday of the month. While there might be a slight dip in temperature over the weekend, the heatwave appears determined to hold its grip over the region. Rainfall is expected to remain occasional, with hit-or-miss showers forecasted throughout the day.

Tonight, the possibility of isolated showers and storms lingers, presenting the potential for localized intense weather conditions such as heavy rain, lightning, and isolated damaging gusts. As the evening progresses, temperatures will range from the mid-70s to around 80, with light winds in the area.

Tomorrow, D.C. is bracing itself for yet another scorcher. Most spots can expect highs in the mid- to upper 90s, as partial sun shines down on the region. With heat indexes potentially soaring as high as 110 at times, it is crucial for residents to remain hydrated and limit their exposure to the sun. Light south to southwest winds will provide minimal respite from the scorching heat. Additionally, there is a chance for isolated showers or thunderstorms to develop in the late afternoon and evening.

The city's current streak of high temperatures continues to climb, with today marking the 18th day this year with temperatures reaching or exceeding 95 degrees. This ties for the fourth most high-temperature days recorded at this point in the year and the 15th most annually. Tomorrow's anticipated high temperatures will add another day to this tally, bringing it up to 19. The highest number of such days in any year was recorded in 2012, with a staggering total of 29. Despite a slight temperature drop over the weekend, there is a possibility of a return to mid-90s early next week.

As the blistering summer shows no signs of letting up, residents are reminded to stay informed about weather updates and to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool. Stay tuned to the latest forecasts and make sure to stay hydrated, seek shade when needed, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
